Adaptasi buku Silence sempat dibuat menjadi film pada tahun 1971 dengan sutradara Masahiro Shinoda. Kemunculan Silence karya Scorsese bukan merupakan remake dari terdahulunya. Penggunaan sinematografi yang cemerlang seakan-akan ingin membuat karyanya berdiri sendiri. Nggak heran kalau film ini masuk nominasi Academy Award untuk Best Cinematography.
