Pada mulanya Masjid Raya Darussalam dibangun pada sekitar tahun 1925 oleh para saudagar Banjar dan Bugis dan yang tinggal di Samarinda. Pada saat itu lokasi masjid Raya Darussalam berada di tepian sungai Mahakam di atas lahan dengan ukuran 25 meter x 25 meter. Sejak pertama kali dibangun masjid Raya Darussalam telah mengalami beberapa kali.
